Was a Son Born to Imam Hassan Askari (as)?

SAYYED DILDAAR HUSSAIN ZAIDI

The Baha’i Doubt

I recently had the opportunity to exchange my views with the Baha’is. During the course of the discussion, with extreme audacity, they claimed that eminent books which are considered to be reliable by the Shiahs like Al Kafi by Shaykh Kulayni and Al Ghaybah by Shaykh Tusi contain traditions that Imam Hassan Askari (as) had no son.

Our response - The Shiah Viewpoint

1. While I have responded to this question in my article on the birth of Imam Mahdi (as), it is important here to draw the attention of my readers to an extremely exasperating trait of the Baha’is - in a desperate effort to prove their point, Baha’is annoyingly play the \"name dropping\" game. The claim to have read traditions from famous Shiah books along with their authors. However they never quote the volume number or the page number of the book. Not surprisingly, they disappear when pressed to bring forth the exact reference along with the volume and/or page number of the book.

2. A tradition to the effect that Imam Hassan Askari (as) had no son is absent not only in Al Kafi and Al Ghaybah, but also in any reliable Shiah book.

3. It is important to note that Imam Hassan Askari (as), despite spending his life under house arrest in a cantonment, was able to make the news of the birth of his son so widespread that for centuries to come, historians who recorded the events of 255 AH documented the birth of Mohammed Ibnil Hasan Sahebaz Zaman Al Hujjat Al Qaem in the house of Imam Hassan Askari (as) in their books.

Leave aside Shiah historians, even authors from Sunni sects have recorded this event in their works. Given below are some of the historians who documented the birth of Imam Mahdi. For some, I have brought forth not only the names of the books and the authors, but also their statement. For others I have brought their names and their books. If any reader wishes to see the actual statements of these authors, I will be happy to provide it on request.

16. Ibne Khallakaan Ash\'ari Shafa\'ei (d. 681 AH) famous as Qaziul Quzaat in volume 3, page 316 of his book Wafayatul Aa\'yaan writes Abul Qasim Mohammed bin Hassan Al Askari is the 12th Imam and Mahdi. The list above is from a complete list of 120 historians who documented that the birth of Imam Mahdi (as) took place in the year 255 AH in the house of Imam Hasan Askari (as).

Conclusion

The birth of Imam Mahdi (as) is an undeniable fact of history. Historians, irrespective of the creed they professed, documented this over the centuries. I wish to ask the Baha’is - why are they seeking to hide the birth of Imam Mahdi. They must clarify this for the Muslims.
