Q: As a historical researcher, how do you evaluate the influence of the mourning in the lunar month of Moharram on the social and political changes in Iran? Where can these effects be detected clearly?
A: I think the Safavi dynasty can be considered as the basis this influence. Of course, the mourning started in the lunar month of Moharram, especially openly by the ruling of an Iranian dynasty, Bouyeh, that caused Abbabi dynasty to be fallen. Since by falling Abbasi dynasty the Shiite could come to scene and mourning for Imam Hussein (P.H.) was openly done. Of course, the mourning wasn’t merely religious; but they were political and social too.
However the Safavi dynasty was a turning point concerning the expansion of Shi’ism and holding mourning ceremonies for the lunar month of Moharram.
Q: What is your analysis regarding Qajar kings?
A: The Qajar kings really believed in the religious rites and tried to expand Shi’ism. Not only Shi’ism was a theological belief; but also it guaranteed the national integrity.
Q:What is your analysis concerning Pahlavi kings?
A: Muhammad Reza Pahlavi didn’t behave like his father; but he created many obstacle against mourning ceremonies. He cancelled them for some years. For instance, in 1343 on the anniversary of 15th of Khordad when it was coincident with Tasoua’ and Ashoora, Shah limited the mourning. Then after he permitted people to mourn for Imam Hussein (P.H.) again, serve supervision was applied in order to prevent the political activities against the Pahlavi system of government.
Muhammad Reza Pahlavi used more secret ways to oppose the religious rites; for example, he prepared the opportunities for Baha’is to be active more. While, we can observe a special cautiousness by Qajar kings specially the king Naseruddin.
Q: Can refer to historical documents regarding this issue?
A: Habibullah Rashidiyan, the English spy says: “I had been in Einul Molk Hoveyda’s house for many years. Einul Molk was of Abbas Effendi’s insiders and of Baha’ism outstanding dignitaries. He was in touch with England for a long time. I was at Einul Molk’s house, Ardashiri came there, too. He said to Einul Molk: We need a person having two specification in Iran to do an important job. First, he should be in military. Of course, he should be cossak not to be a gendarme. Second, he shouldn’t be a real Shiite! In Baha’i assemblies, everybody was speaking about Reza Khan. For instance, in Hajji Akhound assembly who was one of Baha’i dignitaries. Al that period of time, people didn’t differentiate between Babism and Baha’ism. The Babi Hajji Akhound was one of dignitaries of Baha’is in the constitutionalism period of time. Reza Khan was continually participating in his assemblies. Later on, Pahlavi dynasty tried hard to recognize Baha’ism officially as a hard-strong enemy of Shiism thought. Baha’is were influential during Reza Khan and Muhammad Reza’s period of time. They tried hard to recognize Baha’ism officially.
